Eligibility You are age 13-21 and reside in the Columbus or Greater Columbus AreaDuties Service- The Columbus Youth Commission was officially adopted as a part of City Code in 2001. Youth Commissioners take an oath of service and are sworn in during a regularly scheduled City Council Meeting in the fall. Commitment- Youth Commissioners meet no fewer than twice monthly as well as attend City Council meetings. Volunteer commitment includes community service projects, town hall meetings, policy research, youth advocacy, as well as the planning and execution of the Annual Youth Summit. Integrity- Youth Commissioners are expected to exercise positive moral character and social integrity. Representation Commissioners serve as policy advocates to and for their peers. They are the official voice of a youth constituency. There are a total of 21 seats on the Columbus Youth Commission. Of these 21 seats, 14 are in alignment with the cities area commissions and the remaining 7 are considered at-large seats. Selection Application Review- A committee comprised of area youth, civic leaders, youth service professionals, and Area Commissioners review and score submitted applications. Applications are scored on the basis of completeness, experience, recommendation, knowledge of issues, and essay. No portion of the application is weighed heavier than the other. There is no grade point average requirement and candidates are not required to be enrolled in school at the time of application. Qualified candidates are contacted for interview. The application deadline is June 15th, 2007 Interview- A committee comprised of area youth, civic leaders, youth service professionals, and Area Commissioners conduct candidate interviews. Selection- Selected candidates serve as representatives from their respective areas.1 youth representative per area is selected. Students who do not reside in areas 1-14 are considered for at-large seats. (please see attached map) Training- Selected candidates participate in an introductory training retreat during the first and second week of August. Once service begins, training is conducted no less than quarterly. Service- Youth Commissioners are sworn in and thus begin their term of service. Service terms are 2 years.
Governance The youth commission has by-laws or rules of procedure to govern conduct which include provisions for regular or special meetings, voting procedures, amendment of its by-laws or rules, minutes of meetings, or any other procedural matters the commission deems necessary to regulate for the conduct of its business.
